Citrix logon simulator as a service – part2: executing
In the first article – link – on the hosted Goliath Citrix logon simulator I showed you how the setup and preparation of this solution works. I’m sure you went to their website already and looked around. In this article I will show you the outcome of the execution, I wil show how the simulation works and what you kind of details you get. Let me show you how Goliath Citrix logon Simulator actually works.
Execute the simulation
So after you provided them with the details a conference call is planned, they walk you through the environment and you’re given the details to logon. You’ve just seen how this is configured, now it’s time to see some action. so we open the monitor TAB and click on Logon simulator to see the configured simulation.
As you can see in the screenshot the last logon attempt was at 05/07/2016 14:00 (local time of the datacenter where the logon SAAS solution is running). As you can see the %availability is 100% so our demo environment is running fine. If we click on the notepad text box type of icon next to it we will see the details of the last simulation attempt.
What happens here is that the simulation server;
- Starts Internet Explorer and opens the URL configured
- It detects that it is connecting to a Netscaler
- It retrieves the logon button the username and password textbox and drops those details there.
- It will launch the resource that you configured, so like Desktop or in our case Win 2008 R2.
- After a few moments logged on, it will wait 60 seconds, it will logoff.
For some this might seem like basic stuff but it’s not as basic as you think for you work over the whole user chain to get to the desktop. So all components the user is having to deal with are tested in this setup. It’s simulation but the components are not simulated they are real. Moreover, by testing this process you are also validating the configuration of citrix: citrix datastore availability and communication, AD authentication, Storefront to STA communication, Application enumeration, and Profile load. In my case this is our live demo center where customers are shown the awesomeness of products. No fake demo’s but real life testing.
Here is a video of the test I did, we are connecting to a Windows 2008 R2 desktop over a Netscaler/storefront connection. At the end the user is logged of and the session is destroyed, I haven’t captured that, I’m sure you know how a session log off works.
Perhaps you wonder why nothing happens after we are logged on to the desktop, this is because the test is solemnly to test the log on we had no intention to execute anything. So the test is to test the user logon sequence every 20 minutes and if that works we get reports about it and can show our manager that the environment is reachable. You could extent this with also starting an application but that was not the goal of this review.
Is there more to show?
Yes there is more but not from a Citrix Logon simulator SAAS setup, if we want to show more we need to install an agent on-premises. With an agent we can see more details as you might have seen in my previous blogs of Goliath. That hasn’t changed but wil need an agent and is not possible (pretty obvious I think) when just starting a remote session. the coolness is that you can setup a scheduled simulation from anywhere (anywhere AWS can deploy this SAAS solution for Goliath) without any installation needed. If you look for a monitor solution for a SAAS environment and you don’t have access to it other than a user account, this is a good solution.
Logging and reporting
Periodically you will get an E-mail with the results of the Citrix logon simulator, you don’t have to logon to the hosted environment to see if the simulations went well you can see the past logons from the emailed report. I set the mail to come in every day so I have a list of that day, of course you can set the number and so for your liking. What would be nice to add to the notification, something I missed, is the logon duration or the session setup duration. This something many customers and employees are interested at for that gives them instant feeling how everything is preforming. Below you see a screenshot of a part of the notification email, the same information as you would see in the console is shown here except here you see multiple sessions, so if issues would occur this email is very handy to use it will show when on that day the issues were more severe.
With offering a SAAS monitoring solution Goliath is entering a different market,it’s offering monitoring for SAAS environments. it’s I think a very interesting step looking at all the SAAS applications that customers have to work with today. Some of the monitoring features that I written about in earlier articles are not at hand when you don’t install the agent. That’s expected as it is a SAAS solution, only with the installation of the agent you will get the details the agent will provide. It depends on the amount of access you have to the environment of the application, if you have no acces SAAS-only is a wonderful solution, if you have access SAAS+agent is the best solution.
