ControlUp version 5.0

ControlUp version 5.0

ControlUp released a new version in January, version 5.0. ControlUp is a company that has been growing their product over the years from a nice tool to a complete solution for monitoring and management. It’s hard to compare them to other monitoring solutions as ControlUp with others as they offers management together with monitoring.

Version 5.0

So let’s take a look at what version 5.0 is offering you. The biggest features that have been added are;
  • ControlUp insights
  • Insight related settings
  • Citrix license monitoring
  • Session source branch office naming
  • Controller Export
  • Protocol latency
  • PCoIP session bandwidth
  • Alternate suffix for adding computers
  • Non-paged pool memory column
  • Script based action output window

ControlUp Insights

With version 5.0 comes ControlUp Insights, historical reporting and analytics. This is a major  new feature coming with this version. ControlUP Insights in based, as they say it, on a few principals;

  • Simple
  • Interactive
  • Beautiful
  • Insightful

ControlUp Insight is reachable from your browser at https://insights.controlup.com. With the insight module ControlUP is going the same way many other companies are going, cloud based management. We haven’t seen many monitoring solution do this so far but it’s a good sign ControlUP is going there. I want to see the health of my environment no matter where I am, not just from 9to5.

Together with ControlUp insight there are Insight related settings you can set to customise some settings;

  • Data Upload Settings
  • Insight Access Settings
  • Per-user Access Settings
With version 5 all activity data is upload to ControlUp Insights by default. now perhaps you don’t want that to happen, you can control this by changing this settings from the Data Upload tab in the settings window. further on you can set bandwidth limitations and set scheduled times to upload data.
To make sure your data is safe and just anyone from anywhere can access it you can control access and locations. From the Access tab you can make sure every user will log on with 2 factor authentication to the portal. also you can limit the IP ranges from where ControlUp Insights is accessed.
Be default all user will have access to controlUp Insights, I’m sure that not all your employees are that eager to do your work and so they don’t need access here. At the root of your organisation tree at the properties of your organisation you can grant or deny access to certain users.

Together with this insight module in the cloud they also introduced a mobile application to see get your metrics. Both these offerings are what make ControlUp my other monitoring sponsor exceptional solutions, they listen to customers and build what is needed.

I have to say I pleasantly surprised by all the enhancements they’ve done since the last time I wrote about them. Surprised and not surprised for if you talk to the guys from ControlUp you understand fast enough they know what they’re doing. Good stuff here, keep more coming…

So now you want this app… So go to the play store from android or to the app store from Apple. Once you downloaded it and installed it you need to follow a few steps.

  • Start the app, like you didn’t already
  • Open the console from a computer and login to the console
  • Go to Account Management (File >) and click the management button next to mobile devices
  • Add a device here and give it a friendly name, like MYiPhone
  • The activation code will be there at this point
  • Now go back to your mobile app and enter the ControlUp username/email, your password and the activation code.
Mind you this code is only valid for 5 minutes for security reasons.

New Features in version 5.0

There are some new features in version 5.0. You can now monitor the Citrix license server so that you will see how many licenses are in use and how the license usage is doing over a longer period of time.
As you can see in the picture above it will also monitor the Citrix Provisioning services as well as Citrix XenDesktop named and concurrent use. This is a nice differentiation for customers with multiple license forms.Another new feature in version 5 is the logon duration reports, and there is something pretty nice about them but more about that after I’ve shown you the screenshots.

Below you see a screenshot of the logon duration screen from ControlUp Insight together with the number of logons over a period of time,

Below is screenshot of the profile load time, another metric you can see from ControlUp Insight. and now comes the beautiful part of it, perhaps you noted there is a blue line going through the chart.

Well that blue line is what the average measurement is from all their customers that also use ControlUp Insight. That’s the beauty of using a cloud based control solution. all the data from all customers can be collected and so ControlUp know that the average logon time is.

Of course everyone is different and every environment is different but if you add enough metrics the exceptions will disappear in the crowd.It gives you something to work against, that line is your goal to get below… I don’t know if you can disable that feature, You don’t want to show that to your manager you and I know his question…. why are we slower than others?

Session source Branch office naming

A long name for this feature. If you have multiple branch office or subnets you would like to see where the session is originated. This will help you identify if perhaps an issues is happening is a specific part of your network.
The column Branch name can now display a friendly name for a certain subnet or branch office.

PCoIP

If you have VMware Horizon View environment and you use PCoIP as a protocol you now can see the following metric in the session view
  • PCoIP Kbit/sec – Session average
  • PCoIP Kbit/sec – Last recorded
The last recorded will display the last recorded bandwidth consumed for the user session using PCoIP. The average counter will display an average of 20 samples.

Protocol latency

Also in the session view you will find a new column called Protocol latency – session Average. This will display an average of 20 most recent remote connection protocol latency samples.
The column supports the following protocols;
  • Citrix ICA
  • VMware PCoIP
A change here is that it will show a value regardless of the current state of the user session. The current ICA Latency – last recored column only displays valid data when there is activity. A good change I think.

Citrix Provisioning server – Cache to RAM

Citrix provisioning server has been my long time favourite to deploy servers within a Citrix environment, cool technique and to get your IOPS from RAM is pretty awesome. Been doing that before it was mainstream, check out my blogs about that.
Now you can monitor the usage of the Cache to RAM cache from ControlUp by measuring the Non-Paged pool memory metric. It’s not a one-on-one measurement but it comes close to the numbers.

User session activity

If you want to troubleshoot a user environment it is good to have insight into their behaviour. With the user session activity screen you will get that insight view. It will display the user session and will show the changes in connection status.
As you can see in the screenshot it will show which applications are started, it the user is logging off etc. I think this report give a lot in insight and is very helpful.

Script based actions windows

The script-based action window is redesigned to match the classic Powershelgl look and feel.

Controller Export

You can now export comparison data to an Excel sheer containing the Comparison table. The data you can export is data from any Registry key or value, system server, file or network share.

Alternate DNS suffix

Last but not least you can add computers with a DNS suffix different for the one that is used in the Active directory attribute. With this you can manage any computer in the organisation even if they have a custom DNS config that is not identical to the domain FQDN.
